Ingredients (Serves 4 - 5)
1. Breadfruit / Sheema chakka - 1/2 kg, cut into medium cubes
Onion - 1 small, cubed
Green chilly - 1, slit
Coconut tidbits / thenga kothu - 1/4 cup
Turmeric powder - 1/4 - 1/2 tsp
Chilly powder - 2 - 2.5 tsp
Coriander powder - 2.5 tsp
Fennel powder / garam masala - 1 tsp
Curry leaves - 1 - 2 sprigs
Salt - To taste
2. Coconut milk - 1/2 cup (Optional)
3. Oil - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
Dry red chillies - 2
Curry leaves - A few
Pearl onions - 3 - 4
Method
1. Cook all the ingredients numbered 1 in a pan adding about 1 cup water. Cook until the bread fruit is done and the water evaporates completely. Bring down the heat and add 1/2 cup thick coconut milk. Taste check for salt and masala. Cook covered for 2 - 3 minutes and switch off.
2. Heat oil in a small pan. Splutter mustard seeds and fry dry red chillies. Add curry leaves and pearl onions. Saute until pearl onions turn golden. Pour over the curry. Close with a lid for 10 minutes. Mix well and serve with rice / chapatis.
